Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef, the Hamilton Island Outrigger Cup returns in 2026 as Australia’s most iconic outrigger canoe paddling event. Known for its vibrant spirit, competitive atmosphere, and deep paddling history, the event spans four days of multi-disciplined racing, including OC1, OC2, V1, Surfski, and OC6 divisions.
From elite athletes to community paddlers, this event welcomes all levels, ages, and global competitors. Whether you’re reliving past glory in our Reunion Division or chasing your first podium finish, the Hamilton Cup is where the outrigger community gathers to race, reconnect, and celebrate.
Event History
The Hamilton Island Cup was first conceived in 1984 when visionary entrepreneur Keith Williams hosted a showcase race on the newly developed Hamilton Island. The event was sparked by friendly rivalry between the Sea World crew (Williams’ team) and the Max Christmas Gold Coast Crew, linked to the founding of the Outrigger Canoe Club of Australia in 1978.
By 1985, the first official event was launched as the Queensland outrigger titles, which later evolved into the Hamilton Island Cup. With the sport’s rising popularity, the event grew into a four-day paddling festival featuring thousands of competitors. This growth was in part due to the founder's innovative concept, which was to offer free flights to the winners of the Molokai Crossing, the Molokai Hoe canoe race, considered the world championships of the sport. This was the beginning of an international and national paddling partnership that continued for more than 20 years.
The event expanded within Australia and the global paddling community so much so that by the 25th Anniversary in 2008, there was an epic participation with over 2,000 paddlers from 43 Australian clubs and 10 international teams.
After a decade-long pause, we’re thrilled to announce the return of this legendary event in 2026!
